Getir
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Getir is a Turkish instant-grocery delivery company founded in 2015. It pioneered the ultra-fast delivery model, shipping groceries from dark stores to customers' doors in minutes. Fueled by pandemic demand, it expanded rapidly across Europe and the US, reached a $11.8 billion valuation in early 2022, acquired rival Gorillas in December 2022, and raised about $2.4 billion in funding. On April 29, 2024 it announced it would withdraw from the UK, Europe and the US to focus solely on Turkey, its home market, cutting around 1,500 UK jobs; its US subsidiary FreshDirect continued operating.
02 / Getir FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Getir's international expansion collapsed with the post-pandemic return to physical shopping. Its ultra-fast delivery model carried huge operating costs, and demand for online convenience fell sharply after lockdowns ended. The company cut 14% of its workforce in 2023, had already quit Italy, Spain, France and Portugal, and by April 2024 its non-Turkish business accounted for only 7% of revenue. It withdrew from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and the US on April 29, 2024, raising a new round led by Mubadala and G Squared to refocus on Turkey.
