01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Getir (Intl. Ops) describes the international operations of Getir, the Turkish instant-grocery delivery company founded in 2015. During the pandemic it built one of the largest ultra-fast delivery networks in the world, expanding across the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal and the US, employing 23,000 staff across Europe and acquiring rival Gorillas in December 2022. At its peak the company was valued at $11.8 billion. On April 29, 2024 Getir withdrew from all international markets except Turkey, where it kept only its home-market operations plus the US subsidiary FreshDirect.

02 / Getir (Intl. Ops) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Getir's international operations were a casualty of the post-pandemic return to physical shopping. The ultra-fast model ran on huge operating costs while convenience demand fell sharply after lockdowns, margins collapsed, and international revenue shrank to 7% of the total. After cutting 14% of staff in 2023 and exiting Italy, Spain, France and Portugal, Getir withdrew from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and the US on April 29, 2024, putting around 1,500 UK jobs at risk.
