TinyOwl
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
TinyOwl was a Mumbai-based food-delivery startup founded in 2014 by IIT Bombay alumni. It let users order from local restaurants through a smartphone app, scaling to eleven Indian cities and 50,000-plus daily orders at its peak, backed by about $27 million from Sequoia Capital, Matrix Partners, and Nexus Venture Partners.
02 / TinyOwl FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
TinyOwl blitzscaled before proving unit economics: it expanded from Mumbai to eleven cities while negative margins and high delivery and customer-acquisition costs burned through capital. When the money tightened, mass layoffs followed - over 600 employees between late 2015 and early 2016. The company retreated to Mumbai-only service in May 2016 and merged with logistics startup RoadRunnr in June 2016; the combined entity Runnr was later acqui-hired by Zomato.
