Beepkart
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
BeepKart was a Bengaluru-based full-stack marketplace for used two-wheelers, founded by Hemir Doshi and Abhishek Saraf. It handled the entire transaction for buyers and sellers: inspection, refurbishment, financing and warranties, aiming to redefine India's pre-owned two-wheeler market. Over its lifetime it raised more than $18 million from investors including Stellaris Venture Partners, Chiratae Ventures, Vertex Ventures and Innoven Capital, with a $5.6 million Series A from existing investors in April 2024. BeepKart shut down its operations on August 27, 2025, after a four-year run.
02 / Beepkart FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The model collapsed under thin margins and high operating costs. Refurbishment alone cost nearly 10% of vehicle prices in a segment where customers are highly price-sensitive, and while revenue jumped 165% year-on-year to Rs 100 crore in FY24, losses doubled to Rs 66 crore. Aggressive expansion after the 2022 and 2024 fundraises backfired: many new stores in Bengaluru and Chennai were set up within close proximity, cannibalising each other's customer base instead of expanding reach. A string of senior-level exits added to the uncertainty, customers complained on social media about poor vehicle quality and after-sales service, and a planned $20 million Series B failed to materialise. With no fresh capital, the company wound down - first Chennai, then Bengaluru.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Fix unit economics before expanding: BeepKart doubled revenue and doubled losses at the same time - growth amplified the burn.
- 02
Do not open stores that eat each other: multiple outlets in close proximity cannibalised demand instead of growing it.
- 03
Quality is the product in refurbished goods: poor vehicle quality and after-sales complaints destroyed the trust a used-vehicle platform sells.
- 04
Raise before you are desperate: the $20 million Series B never materialised, and without a capital cushion the wind-down was forced.
- 05
Respect ops-heavy capital intensity: used two-wheelers have thin margins, fragmented supply and heavy inspection/refurbishment costs - scale without a margin path is a trap.
