Luko
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Luko (founded 2016, Paris) was a French insurtech selling digital home insurance — some 230,000 policies at its peak. It expanded aggressively in 2022, acquiring German startup Coya and fellow French startup Unkle (unpaid-rent insurance), while burning through capital. A planned acquisition by British insurer Admiral collapsed in October 2023; Luko's parent company, Demain ES, then went under judicial reorganization. Allianz Direct acquired the French home insurance business for €4.3 million, announced in January 2024, keeping the Luko brand alive.
