ShopX India
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
ShopX (10i Commerce Services), founded in Bengaluru in 2015 by Amit Sharma and Apoorva Jois, was a B2B e-commerce enabler for India's kirana stores. Its assisted e-commerce model gave small retailers sourcing, supply chain and credit lines, plus digital services like mobile recharges and bill payments, reaching over 150,000 retailers across 500 cities. Backed by investors including Nandan Nilekani and Li & Fung, it raised about $60 million.
02 / ShopX India FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
ShopX died from structurally broken unit economics: gross margins of 8-12% per transaction could not cover the high cost of acquiring kirana stores through field agents. It raised no new capital after April 2020 while rivals became unicorns, took rupee loans from investor Fung Investment that it could not service, and pivoted to an e-commerce enablement platform in 2021 without fixing the margins. In August 2022 it ceased operations, laid off about 130 employees, and filed for insolvency, stating the business had become unviable at scale. This concerns ShopX's model, not Indian B2B commerce generally.
