GoMechanic
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
GoMechanic was an Indian online vehicle repair platform founded in 2016 by Amit Bhasin, Kushal Karwa, Nitin Rana and Rishabh Karwa. It ran a network of 800 car repair workshops across 20 cities, offering technology-driven car servicing at competitive prices, and serviced 30,000 vehicles in January 2023.
02 / GoMechanic FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
GoMechanic collapsed after its founders admitted to financial misreporting in January 2023. A forensic audit triggered during funding due diligence found artificially inflated revenues, nonexistent garages on the platform, fabricated transaction data and manipulated internal dashboards, with key executives knowingly involved. Investor confidence collapsed, SoftBank and other backers withdrew, and the company laid off about 70% of its workforce. The business was then sold in a distress sale at roughly a 90% discount to its peak valuation.
