filefront
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
FileFront was one of the internet's most popular file-distribution sites for gamers, launched in December 2001 (with roots as FileLeech and Voodoo Extreme's downloads going back to 1997). It hosted patches, mods, demos, videos, drivers, and other game-related content — at its peak holding 48+ terabytes of files — requiring no registration and offering uncapped download speeds. Ziff Davis Media's Game Group acquired FileFront in 2005. In March 2009 Ziff Davis announced it would suspend the site's operations on March 30, 2009, citing economic conditions — but on April 1, 2009, FileFront's original founders bought the site back from Ziff Davis and brought all services back online as an independent company.
02 / filefront FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Ziff Davis's 2008–2009 retreat from gaming amid the global recession: it sold 1UP to UGO, closed EGM magazine, and announced FileFront's suspension on March 30, 2009. Game-centric download services were also losing relevance as BitTorrent and digital distribution rose. The site was only saved when its original founders bought it back on April 1, 2009.
