12seconds
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
12seconds was a short-video messaging service launched in 2008. Users shared public clips limited to twelve seconds; the team later offered an iPhone messaging app connected to Twitter.
02 / 12seconds FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
12seconds.tv never found a sustainable model for short-form video. The service stalled at about 200,000 mostly early-adopter users, with traffic flat for two of its three years, and never worked out a revenue plan - hosting video was expensive while advertising revenue was minimal. A pivot to an asynchronous video-messaging iPhone app tied to Twitter failed to catch on, and the company was squeezed out as Twitter consolidated its own ecosystem. With capital exhausted, the founders shut the service down on October 22, 2010.
