Nuverse
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Nuverse was ByteDance's mobile game publishing brand and one of its six business units. Launched in 2019 as a strategic push into international gaming against Tencent, it published titles including Marvel Snap (by Second Dinner, launched October 2022), One Piece: The Voyage, Crystal of Atland, and Warhammer 40,000: Lost Crusade. ByteDance invested heavily — including the $4 billion acquisition of Shanghai studio Moonton in 2021 — but Nuverse failed to take market share from Tencent and NetEase. On November 27, 2023, ByteDance announced it was winding down the Nuverse brand, laying off hundreds of staff, halting unreleased games, and seeking to sell Moonton; it later agreed to sell Moonton to Savvy Games Group for about $6 billion.
02 / Nuverse FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Nuverse could not compete with Tencent and NetEase, which dominated China's $185 billion gaming market. Its performance was inconsistent — Marvel Snap was its best-known title but never a commercial breakout at scale — and ByteDance never built the traffic and distribution moat that underpins its rivals' gaming success. Following an internal review, ByteDance restructured and withdrew from mainstream gaming entirely, telling staff to stop unreleased projects and redirecting resources toward AI. The Moonton studio, bought for $4 billion in 2021, was put up for sale.
