01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Feiliao (FlipChat in the global market) was ByteDance's interest-based social app, launched in May 2019 as its second attempt — after the Snapchat-like Duoshan in January 2019 — to build a messaging platform that could counter Tencent's block on ByteDance content being shared over WeChat. The app combined instant messaging and forum-style interest groups. It never gathered momentum: it was removed from Apple's App Store within two months of launch (July 2019), and the app and the team behind it were disbanded in December.

02 / Feiliao (Flipchat) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Feiliao failed against WeChat's dominance: like Duoshan before it, the app never gathered momentum in China's social sector, where Tencent's QQ and WeChat owned messaging. Within two months of its May 2019 launch it was removed from Apple's App Store, and Tencent blocked Flipchat links from being opened in WeChat — cutting off the viral channel ByteDance needed. With no path to mass adoption, ByteDance disbanded the app and its team.

03 / EVENT HISTORY

Events in the structured record

  1. Liquidation

SCMP (13 Dec 2021) reported Feiliao (Flipchat) was removed from Chinese app stores, users could no longer access services, and ByteDance dissolved the Feiliao team (per 36Kr), as part of consolidating non-core social products. Parent shutting a unit qualifies as ending event under museum rules.
