01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

LeSports China was the mainland sports-streaming business of LeEco, founded in 2014. It acquired premium sports broadcast rights, including the Chinese Super League, AFC Champions League, NBA and English Premier League, and operated a sports streaming platform for Chinese viewers.

02 / LeSports China FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

An unsustainable rights-buying spree destroyed it: 1.35 billion yuan went on rights in 2016 alone, yet fees for most of them went unpaid by year-end. LeEco siphoned about 4 billion yuan out of the 8.4 billion it raised, and when the parent's debt crisis hit, rights holders terminated contracts, laying off 10% of staff in late 2016. Missing the end-2018 IPO deadline activated investor buyback guarantees, burying the company in arbitration claims.

SCMP reported LeSports HK confirmed shutdown on 15 Mar 2018 over overdue rent, with a High Court winding-up petition seeking to liquidate its assets—distress ending for the LeEco sports-streaming arm.
