01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Musical.ly was a short-form video social app founded in 2014 in Shanghai by Alex Zhu and Luyu Yang. Users created and shared lip-syncing and music videos built around trending sounds and hashtags, making it a hit with the US teenage market; it had offices in Shanghai and Santa Monica, California. On November 9, 2017 ByteDance acquired Musical.ly for up to $1 billion, and on August 2, 2018 it merged Musical.ly into TikTok, consolidating all accounts and data into one app under the TikTok name — the end of Musical.ly as users knew it.
