FCNT
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
FCNT was a Japanese smartphone maker based in Japan, known for the arrows and Rakuraku ('Raku-Raku') phone brands — the latter a senior-friendly line sold mainly through NTT Docomo. The mobile business was split off from Fujitsu in 2016 and sold to Tokyo-based Polaris Capital Group in 2018 for a reported ¥40–50 billion (about $365–456 million). In May 2023 FCNT filed for bankruptcy protection (civil rehabilitation), struggling with stagnant sales, yen depreciation, and the global semiconductor shortage; Lenovo subsequently bought FCNT's assets, including the arrows and Rakuraku brands, and created a new company under its mobile business group that kept the FCNT name.
02 / FCNT FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
FCNT could not survive Japan's brutal smartphone market: like NEC, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, and Panasonic before it, it was squeezed by Apple and Samsung and retreated to a domestic-only niche that kept shrinking. Annual shipments had been cut in half to about 3.1 million units, stagnant sales combined with yen depreciation and the semiconductor shortage, and the Polaris Capital ownership could not turn it around — forcing the May 2023 civil-rehabilitation filing. The market-wide exit accelerated that same month when even Kyocera, a bigger player, closed its consumer mobile phone business.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Asset restructuring
FCNT (Fujitsu phone unit successor; arrows/Raku-Raku) filed for civil rehabilitation with parent REINOWA and JEMS, and said smartphone manufacturing/sales would stop promptly for lack of sponsor support. Nikkei xTECH likewise reported ~¥1431B group liabilities and halt of device manufacture/sales. Lenovo later bought assets (Sep 2023) into a new FCNT entity—original debtor halt is the sourced ending.
