JOLED
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
JOLED was a Japanese OLED display venture formed in 2015 from the OLED R&D divisions of Sony and Panasonic, funded by the state-backed Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ, 56.8% stake, ¥140 billion invested). It pioneered ink-jet printing production of OLED panels — claiming 30–50% lower cost than evaporation — and began commercial production of 21.6" 4K panels in 2017, with a mass-production line built in Nomi, Ishikawa from 2018. It never scaled to profitability. On March 27, 2023 it filed for court protection with debts of ¥33.7 billion ($257–260 million), withdrew from display manufacturing, and closed its factories in Ishikawa and Chiba.
02 / JOLED FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
JOLED never managed to ramp up production or generate meaningful revenue. Its panels appeared only in high-end applications such as LG's professional monitors because yields never improved and costs stayed high. Samsung and other Korean makers invested early at scale, while Chinese rivals undercut on price. The COVID-19 pandemic proved difficult to navigate, and declining OLED demand led to delays and cost overruns. With liabilities exceeding assets since March 2022 and no further fundraising possible, the company filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2023.
