MingleNow
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
MingleNow was a social network for people interested in nightlife.
02 / MingleNow FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
MingleNow was not killed by its own market — it was collateral damage in an acquisition. Founder Gurbaksh Chahal launched the night-owl social network in 2004 alongside his ad company BlueLithium; in 2007 Yahoo bought BlueLithium for its ad network, and MingleNow came along as baggage. Yahoo had no interest in maintaining another social network, and in December 2007 announced the service would close on January 7, 2008. No official explanation was ever given — the product was simply dropped into the deadpool as the unwanted extra in a $300 million ad-tech deal.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Being the sidecar in an acquisition means you live or die on the buyer's strategy, not yours
- 02
Yahoo wanted an ad network, not a social network: know which part of the deal you are
- 03
No official explanation needed when the closure is a line item in someone else's spreadsheet
- 04
If your fate depends on the acquirer, negotiate your survival before the ink dries
