01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Zoomo (later GoZoomo) was a Bangalore-based peer-to-peer marketplace for buying and selling used cars. Founded in 2014 by Arnav Kumar, Himangshu Hazarika, and Aniket Behera, the mobile platform connected buyers with verified, pre-inspected cars sold directly by their owners, without brokerage fees. Backed by SAIF Partners, the company operated in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Pune.

02 / Zoomo FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Zoomo's unit economics never added up. The peer-to-peer model made it impossible to standardize used-car prices, causing constant price revisions between sellers and buyers; only about 20% of listings converted into transactions. The team iterated through four different business models in two quarters, including charging for inspections and value-added services, without fixing the economics. The founders concluded that the young Indian used-car market was not ready for the model and shut the company down while money remained rather than spending it to the last rupee.

03 / EVENT HISTORY

Events in the structured record

  1. Founded

Zoomo was founded in Bangalore by Arnav Kumar, Himangshu Hazarika, and Aniket Behera as a mobile peer-to-peer marketplace for used cars; in December it raised $1 million in seed funding from SAIF Partners.

  2. Expansion

The company, renamed GoZoomo, raised $5 million from SAIF Partners in July 2015 and expanded to five cities, reaching about 3,000 buyers at an average ticket size of $7,500.

  3. Layoffs

In January 2016 the company laid off about 35% of its staff (130 people), citing a strategic pivot toward product-led models after iterating through four business models in two quarters.

  4. Shutdown

In August 2016 GoZoomo shut down operations, citing unsustainable unit economics. With roughly half of the nearly $7 million raised still in the bank, the founders returned the remaining capital to investors instead of spending it; all 65 employees received seven weeks' severance pay and placement assistance.
