01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

The Punjab Kitchen was a Gurgaon, India homemade-food startup founded by hard-core sales professional Amit Gogia and his wife Ekta Gogia, a passionate home cook. With the tagline 'homemade food that fits your lifestyle,' it sold Punjabi veg meals at $2.50 (150 RS) and non-veg meals at $3.5 (200 RS) direct to consumers (B2C, with B2B corporate catering planned later). After 3 months of intense preparation — branding, packaging design, website, delivery tie-ups with Zomato and Swiggy — it launched with two full-time employees, one delivery boy and one cook, investing about $1,200 a month.

02 / The Punjab Kitchen FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Price was the biggest barrier: competitors sold similar meals at half the price, and the market was extremely price-elastic — customers would not pay more for nicer packaging. Without thousands of customers the Gogias could not reach the economies of scale needed to cut meal costs, marketing spend never paid back (mass emailing, newspaper inserts and Facebook ads all flopped; only food bloggers moved the needle), and B2B corporate catering attempts stalled because established restaurants were already entrenched. After about 18 months the business had never broken even, with monthly payouts becoming unbearable.
