Vedantu
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Vedantu, founded in 2014 in Bengaluru, India, is a K-12 online tutoring company built on live interactive classes: students learned from teachers in real-time small-group sessions, later supplemented by recorded and hybrid content. It became a unicorn in 2021 with a 1 billion dollar valuation. When COVID-driven demand faded and funding tightened, the company cut over 1,100 jobs across 2022 and pivoted to cheaper formats; it continues to operate at a reduced scale.
02 / Vedantu FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
COVID pulled demand forward and the company spent like the boom would last: aggressive marketing and teacher payrolls burned cash — FY22 losses hit 696 crore rupees on 166 crore of operating revenue. When schools reopened and capital tightened, growth stalled. Vedantu cut over 1,100 jobs in 2022, narrowed FY23 losses to 373 crore rupees, and retreated from expensive live 1-on-1 tutoring into hybrid and recorded content. The unicorn survived, far smaller than at its peak.
