01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Byju's was India's largest education technology company, a K-12 learning app founded by Byju Raveendran that rode the pandemic online-learning boom to a $22 billion peak valuation in 2022, backed by General Atlantic, BlackRock, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Prosus and the Qatar Investment Authority after raising more than $6 billion. The collapse began when delayed audits revealed FY22 losses of ₹8,245 crore, twenty times the prior year. Insolvency proceedings were admitted in India in July 2024, the United States subsidiary filed for Chapter 11 in February 2024, and the founder publicly admitted the company was worth zero.

02 / Byju's (Global Collapse) FAILURE REASONS

Verified insolvency trigger

The independently verified trigger for the 2024 insolvency proceeding was an unpaid operational debt claimed by BCCI under a sponsorship agreement. The evidence supports this legal trigger but does not reduce all of Byju's wider problems to that single debt.

Debt Default

The tribunal admitted an insolvency petition based on a claimed default of about ₹1.589 billion in sponsorship-related dues.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Acquisition sprees funded by debt need the growth to continue forever: Byju's $2.5 billion buying binge left it over-leveraged when post-Covid demand faded.

  2. 02

Delayed audits are the canary: FY22 losses of ₹8,245 crore, up 20x, arrived long after the money was spent.

  3. 03

A $1.2 billion term loan default hands your fate to lenders and courts on two continents.

  4. 04

Governance failures compound financial ones: investor board exits and fraud allegations turned a downturn into an unravelling.
