01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Livelocker was a Los Angeles startup founded by 26-year-old CEO David McClusky, described by TechCrunch in March 2006 as 'del.icio.us for rich media content with rating aspects from digg'. It let users bookmark, categorize and share links to videos, audio content and photos, attaching ratings and collecting them in their own 'locker'. Content stayed hosted on other sites — Livelocker stored only the links — deliberately deflecting copyright responsibility to site holders while building a community to find and share popular online media. After three months of development and one month of private beta, it publicly launched in March 2006 with a broader launch campaign planned for the following month.
