01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Penguin Esports (企鹅电竞) was Tencent's own game-streaming platform in China, launched around 2016 as a Twitch-like service where hosts live-streamed themselves playing games such as Tencent's League of Legends and Clash Royale.

02 / Penguin Esports FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Penguin Esports never achieved a substantial market share and became redundant inside Tencent, which already owned China's two largest streaming platforms DouYu and Huya (over 70% combined share). Beijing blocked the planned DouYu–Huya merger on antitrust grounds, killing the plan to fold Penguin into the combined entity; meanwhile Bilibili, Kuaishou and Douyin competed for users and advertising, and a gaming licence freeze plus limits on minors' play time squeezed content. Tencent shut the platform down as part of a broader business streamlining after the regulatory crackdown.
