Bemba

The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.

01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Bemba Media was a Dutch startup that built a browser plug-in / bookmarklet for quick social sharing and bookmarking. Users could share and bookmark items from across the web - particularly from social networking sites - in a straightforward way, with integrations into most major social networks, sharing on third-party communities and the Bemba network, and detailed statistics. The company had raised an undisclosed amount of angel funding from a private investor. In January 2009 it shut down: new registrations stopped immediately and the service faded out completely by February 8.

02 / Bemba FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

The stated reason was simple and financial: the user base was not growing fast enough to pay the company's expenses. Despite a well-liked product with good social-network integrations and statistics, it never reached enough active users to cover its costs, and with only undisclosed angel funding behind it, there was no capital buffer to keep going. The team told users they were 'especially sorry for those of you who have been using Bemba actively' and offered a CSV export of shared links, titles and comments.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Grow fast enough to pay expenses, or cut expenses: a loved product still dies if the user base cannot fund the burn.

  2. 02

A tool needs distribution, not just features: good integrations and statistics did not create enough active users.

  3. 03

Have a capital buffer for slow growth: with only undisclosed angel funding, there was no runway to ride out the trough.
