01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Canada Jetlines was a Canadian ultra-low-cost leisure airline based in Mississauga, Ontario. Launched in September 2022, it operated point-to-point flights from Toronto to destinations across Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and Mexico, targeting sun-seeking leisure travelers with low fares. The carrier also provided charter flights for sports teams and businesses, and leased its fleet to other airlines during summer months through its Canada Jetlines Vacations subsidiary.

02 / Canada Jetlines FAILURE REASONS

Failure factors supported by the current evidence

On 15 Aug 2024 Canada Jetlines grounded flights and said it would seek creditor protection because, after pursuing strategic transactions and equity and debt financings, it could not obtain the financing required to continue operations.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Reported losses of approximately $14.2 million over the 12 months ending March 2024.

  2. 02

Suspended all flights and ceased operations on August 15, 2024, after failing to secure the financing needed to continue, following the resignation of four executives including CEO Brigitte Goersch.

  3. 03

Made a voluntary assignment in bankruptcy for the benefit of its creditors under section 49 of Canada's Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act on September 11, 2024, owing creditors about USD 8.7 million; BDO Canada was appointed trustee.

  4. 04

Trading in the company's shares was suspended and later delisted; Canada Jetlines Vacations cancelled all future vacation packages and issued refunds.

  5. 05

No reliable disclosed figure exists for a realized loss beyond the reported operating losses; the $8.7 million is creditor debt, not a reported loss amount.
