Ello
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Ello was an ad-free social network created by Paul Budnitz and Todd Berger and launched in March 2014. Positioning itself as the anti-Facebook, it offered a simple, minimal social network where real names were not required and promised never to show ads or sell user data — a pledge it enshrined legally by reincorporating as a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation. It exploded in September 2014 when Facebook's real-name policy drove users, including drag artists and the LGBT community, to seek a new home.
02 / Ello FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Ello was a victim of its own hype. After the initial explosion of interest, traffic trailed off: the site had only a bare minimum of features, search did not work well, and users could not find their friends. Without advertising, it never found a sustainable revenue model — planned paid premium features never materialized at scale — and the network faded into inactivity before shutting down in July 2023.
