01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Orchest was a Rotterdam-based open-source data science platform founded in 2020 by Rick Lamers and Yannick Perrenet. A cloud-native IDE, it let teams build data pipelines iteratively by editing and connecting notebooks and scripts, abstracting away infrastructure concerns so data scientists could focus on data and algorithms. Its pitch: become the data science platform inside companies so they no longer need a dedicated ML infrastructure team. In October 2021 it raised a €3 million seed round co-led by Gradient Ventures (Google's AI fund) and Basis Set Ventures.
