2U
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
2U was an American education technology company founded in 2008 that partnered with universities to build and run online degree programs - the 'online program management' (OPM) model - sharing tuition revenue with schools. It worked with more than 260 colleges and universities, went public in 2014, and in 2021 acquired the edX massive-open-online-course platform from Harvard and MIT for $800 million, making edX its flagship brand.
02 / 2U FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
2U was crushed by debt it could not support with revenue. The $800 million edX acquisition in 2021 added roughly $500 million in debt to the balance sheet, and the company never found a way to monetize the combined business at scale: universities increasingly launched their own online programs instead of outsourcing, competition intensified, and regulators moved to tighten oversight of online programs. Inflation made the debt load harder to carry. The market capitalization collapsed from a 2018 peak of $5 billion to about $11 million at the July 2024 bankruptcy filing, and the company cut 29% of its workforce between late 2022 and early 2024.
