01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

17Zuoye (together-education network, listed as 17 Education & Technology Group, NASDAQ: YQ) was a Chinese K-12 education technology company founded in 2011 by Liu Chang, a former New Oriental executive. It sold 'Internet + education' products on an 'in school + after school' model: smart classroom and homework solutions for schools, and paid online after-school tutoring in academic subjects for primary and secondary students. By 2020 it served about 70,000 schools - roughly a third of China's public primary and secondary schools - reaching more than 54 million students and 45 million parents.

02 / 17zuoye FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

The company's core revenue came from after-school online tutoring, which accounted for 93% of revenue in the first nine months of 2020. In July 2021, China's 'double reduction' policy banned for-profit tutoring in core school subjects, forcing the nationwide cessation of exactly that business. Revenue collapsed - down 80% year over year by the second quarter of 2022 - and the company had to abandon its main product line and pivot to lower-margin school software services. Years of heavy sales and marketing spending had already produced cumulative net losses of about 2.6 billion yuan before the policy shock, leaving almost no buffer to survive it.

03 / EVENT HISTORY

Events in the structured record

  1. Product or service closed

On 7 December 2021, 17Education / 一起教育科技 (NASDAQ: YQ; 17zuoye homework platform) announced it would stop K-12 academic after-school tutoring services in China on 31 December 2021 and shift to in-school homework SaaS. This is a core tutoring-line shutdown under the Double Reduction policy, not a dissolution of the listed company, which continued operating.
