Dada English
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Dada English (哒哒英语, formerly DadaABC) was a Shanghai-based online education company founded in April 2013 by CEO Zhi Hui. It ran a one-on-one online tutoring platform teaching English to children aged 4 to 16 using native-English-speaking teachers in live, interactive classrooms. Backed by investors including Tiger Global, TAL Education and Warburg Pincus, it raised a $100 million Series C in 2018 and a $255 million Series D in 2019, claiming 7 million registered users and hundreds of thousands of paying students, with 2019 revenue of 600 to 700 million yuan.
02 / Dada English FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Dada English was killed by China's 'double reduction' policy of July 2021, which outlawed for-profit tutoring in core school subjects and barred companies from hiring foreign teachers based outside China - the core of Dada's native-speaker teaching model. Even before the policy, the business was under strain: in April 2020, TAL Education disclosed an investment agreement for a controlling interest in a troubled English-training institution with significant deferred-income liabilities, widely believed to be Dada. Unable to operate its model under the new rules, the company closed its doors around the end of 2021.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
In July 2021, Beijing's 'double reduction' policy banned for-profit academic tutoring and the use of overseas-based foreign teachers, destroying Dada's business model.
- 02
Dada's teachers taught their last classes at the end of 2021, and the company's website was left showing a 'technical maintenance' notice.
- 03
No bankruptcy filing or asset sale was reported; the shutdown was a policy-driven wind-down of the tutoring operation.
- 04
The company's 'significant deferred income liabilities' flagged by TAL in 2020 were a balance-sheet liability, not a disclosed loss; no reliable loss figure, loss subject, period or basis was publicly disclosed, so no loss amount is recorded.
