SoftBank Robotics (Pepper)
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
SoftBank Robotics was the robotics arm of SoftBank Group, originating in SoftBank's 2012 acquisition of French robotics firm Aldebaran. Its signature product was Pepper, the chest-high humanoid robot unveiled in 2014 and billed as the first robot with 'a heart,' capable of recognizing basic human emotions. Built by Foxconn in China and sold from 2015 at $1,790 (plus rental fees) to consumers and over $20,000 to businesses, Pepper was deployed to greet people in stores, hotels, airports and SoftBank's own mobile phone shops.
02 / SoftBank Robotics (Pepper) FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Pepper never found a global customer base. Only 27,000 units were ever produced; sales suffered from limited functionality, unreliability and a high price, while culture clashes between the French robotics team and Tokyo management reportedly hampered development. The company propped up sales by placing Pepper in its own phone stores, then shifted focus to the cleaning robot Whiz. In June 2021 SoftBank stopped Pepper production and began cutting roughly half of its ~330 France-based staff plus sales teams in the US and UK—downgrading CEO Masayoshi Son's plan to make SoftBank a robotics industry leader.
