Dunzo
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Dunzo was an Indian hyperlocal delivery platform founded in 2014 in Bengaluru. It began as a WhatsApp-based personal errand service and grew into a super-app for pickups, drops and on-demand purchases — entering the local lexicon as “Dunzo it.” It attracted Google's first direct investment in an Indian startup and, in 2022, a $200 million investment from Reliance Retail, before pivoting to the ultra-fast quick-commerce brand Dunzo Daily with dark stores in major cities.
02 / Dunzo FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The quick-commerce pivot was the undoing. Dunzo Daily's dark-store model needed capital far beyond what the company could raise — Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart were burning hundreds of millions to win the same 10-minute-delivery race. Dunzo's $240M raised proved insufficient: it could not keep funding the dark-store network, delayed salaries, and lost merchant and rider trust. The app went offline in January 2025 and insolvency proceedings followed.
