Samba Mobile
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Samba Mobile was a UK mobile virtual network operator founded in May 2010 by Ben Atherton. It offered free 3G mobile broadband in exchange for users watching video adverts on PCs and tablets, reselling connectivity on the Three mobile network. The service launched in July 2012 and reported about 10,000 users by November that year. It had raised $1.4 million from angel investors including former Coca-Cola ad director David Wheldon, Orange founding executive Richard Brennan, and Caribbean telco Digicel.
02 / Samba Mobile FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
Samba was killed by wholesale economics it could not fix. The company had to pay for mobile data in advance, and negotiations with its wholesale data partners for lower costs failed; with the end of a billing period reached and no deal, the service had to stop with immediate effect. Its own website notice blamed the closure on high and increasing — and therefore unsustainable — data costs. It became the latest ad-funded MVNO to fail after Blyk and Ovivo. Founder Ben Atherton later carried the technology forward as a B2B play, and remained a co-founder of the mobile marketing platform Brandtone.

05 / AFTERMATH
Lessons
Samba Mobile is the textbook case of why ad-funded mobile data kept failing: advertising revenue per user could not cover prepaid wholesale data costs, and an MVNO that cannot renegotiate wholesale rates has no pricing lever of its own. Several tried this model — none yet succeeded.
