AllFreeCalls
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
AllFreeCalls, founded by Pat Phelan, let people make free international phone calls by exploiting an FCC regulation that paid kickbacks on incoming calls to rural phone companies. Users dialed a phone number in Iowa and then called out to dozens of countries from there, paying only the toll to Iowa, if any.
02 / AllFreeCalls FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
AllFreeCalls was shut down because its business model depended entirely on a regulatory loophole: the free calls caused AT&T's subsidy payments to a single Iowa telco to jump from $2,000 a month to $2,000,000, provoking a flurry of legal action from AT&T. Under that pressure, the Iowa provider withdrew, taking the service offline. When Phelan relaunched it as Yak4Ever, the new version required users to register and pre-set international numbers in advance, adding enough friction to kill its appeal.
