Lightyear
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Lightyear was a Dutch solar electric car startup founded in 2016 by a group of TU Eindhoven students. After raising over €200 million, it built the Lightyear 0 (formerly One) — an ultra-aerodynamic €250,000 flagship with five square meters of solar panels that could add dozens of kilometers of range per day, letting owners commute for months without plugging in. Production was outsourced to Valmet Automotive in Finland, with a planned run of 946 cars; it then showed the affordable Lightyear 2 (under €40,000, ~500 miles WLTP range) at CES 2023, collecting 40,000 individual reservations and 20,000 corporate sign-ups.
02 / Lightyear FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
The economics of building a €250,000 solar halo car never worked: production cost overruns forced Lightyear to halt Lightyear 0 production in January 2023 — after barely a dozen cars were made — and its operating company Atlas Technologies B.V. filed for bankruptcy in the Dutch courts, with a trustee appointed to oversee proceedings. Why pour money into selling 946 cars when resources could go to the Lightyear 2's promised 60,000 buyers? But the pivot came too late; the end of the money arrived before the end of the dream. The company later emerged from bankruptcy under new management, refocused on solar-roof charging technology for other automakers rather than building its own cars.

Events in the structured record
- Bankruptcy
On 26 Jan 2023 Rechtbank Oost-Brabant declared Lightyear's production operating company Atlas Technologies B.V. bankrupt after suspension-of-payments proceedings; trustee R. van Oeijen (Holla) appointed. Silicon Canals and NL Times reported ~600 staff impact; holding/IP sister entities were discussed separately from the Atlas bankruptcy.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01

- 02
The slimmed-down company aimed at commercial production by 2026-2027.
- 03
The original moonshot - the world's first production solar car, the Lightyear 0 - was abandoned with the bankruptcy.
