01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Nowi was a Delft, Netherlands-based semiconductor startup founded in 2016 by Simon van der Jagt and Omar Link. It developed energy-harvesting power management ICs (PMICs) — chips that could use ambient sources of electricity such as light or vibrations as a power source, potentially eliminating the need for battery replacement in simple internet-connected devices and sensors. The startup held eight patents. On November 11, 2022, it was acquired by Nijmegen-based semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia for an undisclosed sum; the Dutch government retroactively reviewed the deal in 2023 and in November 2023 ruled it not a national security threat and would not block it.
