Dime
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Dime was a Y Combinator Summer 2021 startup founded in San Francisco by Ben Share (Stanford CS, ex-Google) and Aaron Barbieri-Aghib. It built an NFT marketplace designed for mainstream users: creators could turn Instagram content into digital collectibles and fans could buy them with US dollars — no crypto wallets, no gas fees, no cryptocurrency. Backed by Wing VC, Soma Capital and Y Combinator, it shut down as the NFT market collapsed in 2022–2023.
02 / Dime FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Dime was killed by its market's timing. It launched an NFT marketplace at the absolute peak of NFT hype in 2021, removing crypto friction to reach mainstream buyers — but when the NFT market collapsed through 2022 and 2023, the entire demand base it was built for evaporated. No product refinement could outrun a category-wide wipeout: the problem was not onboarding friction but that almost nobody wanted NFTs at any price. The founders shut the marketplace down and pivoted the company to Dime Autotest, an automated end-to-end website testing platform.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Removing friction does not create demand: easier NFTs still died with the NFT market
- 02
Launching at the peak of a hype cycle means the only direction is down
- 03
When the category collapses, the right move is the pivot — the team survived as Dime Autotest
- 04
USD on-ramps were a real insight, but insights need a market that still exists
