Entropy
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Entropy was a decentralized crypto custody startup founded in 2022 by self-taught cryptographer Tux Pacific. Its threshold-signing network let businesses hold digital assets without a centralized custodian; it raised a $25 million seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz in 2022 before pivoting toward crypto automation.
02 / Entropy FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Entropy died because its model was never venture-scale. After four years, several pivots and two rounds of layoffs, founder Tux Pacific concluded the decentralized custody platform could not grow fast enough to justify venture investment. A final 2025 pivot into a crypto-automation platform - basically n8n for crypto - also missed the growth bar. Rather than pivot again, Entropy shut down in January 2026 and returned remaining capital to a16z, Coinbase Ventures and others.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Operations ended
Entropy announced in January 2026 that it would wind up and return remaining capital to investors.
