Sono Motors
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Sono Motors, founded in 2016 in Munich by Laurin Hahn and Jona Christians, developed the Sion, a solar-powered passenger car with solar panels integrated into its bodywork. It attracted more than 45,000 reservations and pre-orders and went public on Nasdaq in 2021.
02 / Sono Motors FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Getting a new car into production proved too resource-intensive amid financial market instability and failed external financing. On February 24, 2023 Sono Motors terminated the Sion program with immediate effect and laid off around 250–300 employees, pivoting to a purely solar B2B business (solar retrofit kits for buses and third-party vehicles). Unable to sell the Sion project or raise financing, management concluded both Sono Motors GmbH and parent Sono Group N.V. were over-indebted and facing impending illiquidity, and applied for self-administration proceedings under the German Insolvency Act on May 15, 2023. A restructuring via Yorkville Advisors financing followed; the Sion program was separated and put up for sale.
