01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Kopernikus Automotive was a Leipzig, Germany-based AI startup developing infrastructure-based autonomous driving software. Founded by Stefan Jenzowsky (Managing Director, formerly a vice-president at Siemens) and Tim von Toerne (COO), it pivoted from self-driving retrofit kits to middleware for automated valet parking (AVP Type 2) and autonomous vehicle maneuvering: cameras and computers installed in a facility monitor and drive vehicles centrally. It won contracts with Volkswagen's CARIAD software group for a Wolfsburg test facility and with two Ford factories, and demonstrated its technology at CES 2023 with support from Continental, which holds a minority stake.
