Woolet
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Woolet was a Polish smart-wallet startup co-founded by Marek Ciesla. Its Woolet was a slim, handcrafted leather wallet with an embedded Bluetooth tether that rang your phone when you left the wallet behind, with a self-charging battery. It ran a successful 2015 Kickstarter: 2,627 backers pledged $332,694 (goal: $15,000), making it briefly the most popular technology project on the platform, and it shipped the wallet with years of sales afterwards.
02 / Woolet FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The smart-wallet category changed under Woolet: tracking became a feature, not a product. When Apple shipped AirTag, every wallet in the world became a 'smart wallet' for $29, and competing on electronics inside a leather sleeve stopped making sense. As co-founder Marek Ciesla later wrote, the market did not care how much had been invested in the product - the promise of never losing a wallet was no longer scarce. He killed the wallet product while keeping the Woolet brand, relaunching it in 2026 as an eyewear brand for wide faces.
