GAC Stellantis China
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
GAC-Stellantis, operated as GAC FCA, was a joint venture formed in 2010 between Guangzhou Automobile Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (later Stellantis) to build and sell Jeep vehicles in China, including the Cherokee SUV and Compass crossover. Sales peaked in 2017, then collapsed from 73,900 units in 2020 to 20,100 in 2021 and fewer than 2,000 in 2022. On October 31, 2022 both shareholders approved a bankruptcy filing; the venture had liabilities of almost 111% of its 7.3 billion yuan in assets.
02 / GAC Stellantis China FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
GAC-FCA failed because it could not keep up with changes in the Chinese market. Sales fell 50% in 2021 alone, and it sold just one vehicle in May 2022; a former Chrysler executive called it a 1980s business model in the 21st century. A 4-billion-yuan rescue injection by both shareholders in 2020-2021 failed to reverse the decline. The partnership then broke over trust: in January 2022 Stellantis unilaterally announced it would raise its stake to 75%, a move GAC publicly denied; in July 2022 the joint venture was terminated, and in October it filed for bankruptcy with liabilities exceeding its assets.
