01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Mercury was a Boston-based fan-experience company for student athletes and collegiate sports programs, founded by co-founder and CEO Porter Grieve. It built white-label, NFT-gated fan community platforms - 'front-row-seat' digital spaces where fans got athlete conversations, team content and digital collectibles unlocking access to games and college events. Best known for Kansas University's Rock Chalk fan site and the University of Kentucky's Blue Chips fan community, it signed group NIL deals with 70+ Kentucky athletes and partnered with the athletic departments of UCF, Clemson, Oklahoma and Villanova. In October 2022 it raised a $7.5 million seed round led by Multicoin Capital with participation from North Island Ventures, Crosslink Capital and Brevan Howard Digital, having earlier taken seed backing from Collab+Currency and Apolo Ohno. No dated shutdown or acquisition event was found.
