Wukong Wenda
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Wukong Wenda (悟空问答) was ByteDance's question-and-answer product, launched in 2017 as a standalone app plus website - almost at the same time ByteDance launched Douyin. Conceived as an upgraded version of Toutiao's Q&A section and pitched against Zhihu, it poached more than 300 influencers from Zhihu in 2017 and claimed over 100 million users that year. To seed content, ByteDance pledged 1 billion yuan ($154 million) to contributors in 2018 and another 500 million yuan ($77.3 million) to top creators.
02 / Wukong Wenda FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Wukong Wenda never escaped being a cash-fueled satellite of Toutiao. The money-throwing strategy bought early users but not a durable community: Zhihu kept the quality high-ground, and by August 2018 ByteDance was reportedly no longer treating Wukong as a main priority, merging its team with another unit, while Douyin took off. Without the subsidies, momentum faded; ByteDance decided to fold the content back into Jinri Toutiao. The app was removed from app stores on January 20, 2021 and ceased functioning on February 3, 2021.
