Recur
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Recur was a Web3 startup founded in 2021 that provided NFT 'building blocks' for businesses — letting brands launch digital collectibles, in-game assets and loyalty programs. It hosted some of the most high-profile licensed NFT collections of the era, including Hello Kitty (Sanrio), Nickelodeon (Rugrats, Hey Arnold, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Star Trek and The Godfather, and at its peak was valued at $333 million after a $50 million Series A in late 2021.
02 / Recur FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
Recur fell with the NFT market. After the 2021 boom, the prolonged crypto winter and collapsing demand for digital collectibles destroyed its economics — its own Recur Pass, which once sold for $88,888 at the height of the frenzy, was trading for a few dollars by 2023. The company said 'unforeseen challenges and shifts in the business landscape' made it impossible to keep delivering its promised level of service. Its shutdown, three weeks after the NFT creator platform Nifty's folded, was part of a broader wipeout of NFT infrastructure.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
On August 18, 2023, Recur announced it would gradually wind down its Web3 platform, with full deprecation effective November 16, 2023.
- 02
Primary and secondary sales and new account creation were disabled immediately; users were advised to move NFTs to self-custodial wallets by November 16 and cash out stablecoin balances by that date.
- 03
To preserve the collectibles, Recur migrated all NFT media and metadata to the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) by November 22, 2023, with assets hosted on the Filecoin network.
