Spotify Stations
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Spotify Stations was a lightweight standalone listening app from Spotify, designed for people who wanted a radio-like experience without hunting for music or building playlists. Instead of a library of songs and artists, users got a list of curated stations that played automatically, resumed where they left off, and learned from their tastes over time. The app offered a minimalist alternative to the flagship Spotify app's crowded interface - open it, pick a station, and listen. It never left beta: it launched in Australia in early 2018, expanded to the US and other regions in 2019, and was shut down in May 2022.
02 / Spotify Stations FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Spotify Stations was shut down because the experiment had run its course. Spotify described Stations as one of its routine product tests: some pave the way for the broader experience, others are just learning. The standalone app became redundant as the main Spotify app already offered the same radio-style experience through its Spotify Radio feature, which builds a playlist from any song, album, playlist, or artist. With feature overlap and a beta that never graduated to a full rollout, Spotify chose to fold the experience back into the flagship app, letting users transfer their favorite stations over.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Beta launched in Australia
Spotify Stations launched in early 2018 as a limited beta in Australia, offering a minimalist radio-like listening experience.
- US and regional expansion
The beta expanded to the United States and other regions in 2019, pitched as a simpler alternative to the main Spotify app - and, by some, as a Pandora copycat.
- App shut down
Spotify announced it would not extend the Stations rollout; on May 16, 2022 the Stations app and web player were discontinued, with users invited to transfer favorite stations into the main Spotify app's Radio feature.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
On May 16, 2022, Spotify discontinued the Stations app and web player, ending the beta; users could transfer their favorite stations to the main Spotify app.
- 02
Spotify gave no financial figures for the experiment; as an internal product test by a public company, no standalone loss was disclosed.
- 03
The parent company Spotify continued operating normally - the shutdown was a product decision, not a business failure.
