01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Ex.fm was a music discovery startup launched in 2010 as Extension.fm, a Chrome extension that scavenged the web for MP3 files and let users upload them to a cloud-based personal library. Backed by about $2.75 million from Spark Capital, Betaworks, and Founder Collective, it grew into a music recommendation service across a website, iPhone and Android apps, browser extensions, and a developer API, recommending songs based on everything users listened to across the internet.

02 / Exfm FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Ex.fm's founders blamed the 'litigious nature of the music industry': every time the service saw meaningful growth, it immediately attracted takedowns and legal threats from record labels, racking up legal expenses. The service also faced technology and server costs it struggled to cover, and could not compete with the deeper pockets of large subscription platforms moving into streaming — Spotify, Deezer, Beats Music, and YouTube — without itself paying licensing fees.

03 / EVENT HISTORY

Events in the structured record

  1. Product or service closed

In a Dec 2013 user email quoted by The Next Web, Exfm founders Dan Kantor, Marshall Jones and Jason Culler said financial, technical and legal pressures meant they could no longer keep the Exfm website and apps running; mobile apps were set to stop 15 Jan 2014.

  2. Product or service closed

Hypebot reported Exfm’s 16 May 2014 notice that on Monday 19 May 2014 it would shut down Exfm entirely—website, mobile apps, extensions and API—after a temporary Chrome-extension-only period.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

In December 2013 the company announced it would shut down Ex.fm; after an outpouring of support from fans, the founders canceled the closure in January 2014 and kept the service running while exploring options.

  2. 02

The reprieve did not last: on May 19, 2014 the company shut down Ex.fm for good, including the website, mobile apps, extensions, and API.

  3. 03

In August 2014 the Seattle subscription service Rhapsody acquired Ex.fm (alongside SoundTracking), bringing the founding team on board to build a social discovery engine.
