Coinbase NFT
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Coinbase NFT was the NFT marketplace launched by crypto exchange Coinbase (waitlist opened October 2021; marketplace launched spring 2022). It combined an NFT trading venue with social features, creator drops, bulk management tools, rarity filters, and time-delayed listings, aiming to help mainstream users access and learn about NFTs.
02 / Coinbase NFT FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Coinbase NFT's launch was lackluster from the start, with daily trading volume at one point as low as $106. In February 2023 the team paused creator drops and realigned resources, Chief Product Officer Surojit Chatterjee stepped away, and the marketplace never recovered against OpenSea's dominance and the broader NFT market contraction. Coinbase quietly wound the marketplace down afterward, redirecting attention to other bets such as Base and USDC.
