01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Umincorp was a Dutch plastic recycling company based in Rotterdam that recovered post-consumer plastic from household waste in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Using a magnetic density separation process built on ferromagnetic fluid and engineered magnets, it recovered mixed plastics at high yields and polymer purities and reprocessed them into food-grade granules, which it sold to producers as raw material for new packaging, including for the supermarket chain Albert Heijn.

02 / Umincorp FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Umincorp collapsed because its recycled plastic could no longer compete on price with new plastic made from cheap fossil raw materials, while rising wage and energy costs squeezed margins further. A decisive blow came from stricter European rules: plastic recovered from non-separated waste could no longer, even after cleaning, be used for food packaging, which eliminated the company's core PET food-packaging revenue line. The combination of a deteriorating price environment and the loss of its highest-value market made the business unviable, forcing it into bankruptcy in early 2024.
