Blin.gy
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Blin.gy was a music-video AR app that let users insert themselves into their favorite music videos on their phones. It started life three years earlier as Chosen, a talent competition app with a marketing partnership with Ellen DeGeneres, founded by serial music-tech entrepreneur David Hyman (Gracenote, MOG, Beats Music). When Chosen struggled to compete with Musical.ly, the team pivoted: they built a greenscreen effect that needed no studio, using a patent-pending algorithm combining chroma keying with object-class and edge detection so phone cameras could cut users out of backgrounds - even moving, non-stabilized ones. Rebranded as Blin.gy in early 2017, it got a little over one million downloads. After raising at least $10 million, it shut down on September 18, 2017 when a potential acquisition fell through.
02 / Blin.gy FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Blin.gy died of the acquirer-shaped hole: founder David Hyman wrote that the startup 'decided to close up shop after a potential acquisition fell through.' Hyman, a music-tech veteran, had already watched the first product, Chosen, lose to Musical.ly despite Ellen DeGeneres' backing. The pivot to AR was genuinely novel - the team wrote a white paper on their real-time video segmentation - but novelty is not distribution: the app topped out at just over a million downloads, mostly among tweens, in a market where attention belonged to Musical.ly. With $10M spent, no growth engine, and no buyer, there was no third act. The lesson Hyman drew: plan your company so it doesn't die when the acquisition does.

Overall assessment: Not completed
05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Never build the plan around one acquisition: when it fell through, the company had no alternative.
- 02
Novel tech is not distribution: the segmentation algorithm was real; the users were not enough.
- 03
Know your acquirer before the end: court buyers while you have leverage, not desperation.
- 04
Celebrity partnerships don't fix retention: Ellen DeGeneres could not save Chosen from Musical.ly.
- 05
One million downloads among tweens is a feature, not a business.
