CentML
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
CentML was a Toronto-based AI infrastructure startup founded in 2022 by University of Toronto associate professor Gennady Pekhimenko, COO Akbar Nurlybayev, CTO Shang Wang and Anand Jayarajan. Its software dramatically improved the performance and cost of deploying machine learning models: predicting processing times across hardware setups, monitoring systems for underutilization (cost, power consumption, emissions), and automatically redistributing tasks — claiming speed-ups of inference and training of up to 8x with no loss of accuracy, including optimizing Llama 2 to run 3x faster on previous-generation GPUs at 60% lower cost. It raised $30.5 million in an extended seed round with participation from Gradient Ventures, TR Ventures, Nvidia and Microsoft's Misha Bilenko, along with Radical Ventures, Deloitte Ventures and Thomson Reuters Ventures. Nvidia — which had already backed CentML in the seed round — acquired the company for an undisclosed amount in 2025; at least 15 engineers and two interns moved to Nvidia, and CentML's federal registration was discontinued on June 6, 2025, ceasing operations by July 17.
02 / CentML FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
CentML was not a failure in the conventional sense — it was acquired by one of its own investors at the height of the AI infrastructure boom. Its independent path, however, faced structural pressure: optimizing model deployment is a feature of the AI software stack, and the companies best positioned to capture that value are the hardware and platform giants themselves. Nvidia, which had already backed CentML's $37M CAD seed round, effectively concluded that owning the optimization layer outright was more valuable than remaining a customer or partner: it brought the founding team (Pekhimenko, Nurlybayev, Wang) into leadership roles to steer its AI software efforts. The deal also fit a broader AI talent land-grab in Canada, mirroring AMD's acquisition of Toronto-based Untether AI. With the founding team moving to Nvidia and not all employees making the transition, CentML ceased operations as an independent company by mid-July 2025.
